I think the number was closer to 1300 people this year, which is down 500 from last year. No big surprise since new product was not released.

As for newbies, at the keynote, folks for which this was their first Devcon, were asked to raise their hands. I would say 10-15% were first-timers. Of course, this does not necessarily map to their respective skill levels.
