A really WAG - could it be your system sometimes runs out of file handles and can't open the file? Or could it be it's trying to USE the .frx exclusively while it's open in another instance?
Actually, does the problem narrow down to not being able to open the .frx as a table? Any strange characters in the filename? Does it do it with this one frx only or more of them?
