Paige, this is basically what PACK does internally anyway- is there a reason that you don't want to use it?
As far as recreating the tags, there is nothing special to consider as far as the dbc goes except if you use relationships in the dbc for RI. YOu just have to remember to recreate the relationships as well as the tags after you have killed everything.
