If I were to hazard a guess on this, I'd say the decision was based on utility. I recall a number of articles in past FPA's dealing with the JustFName(), JustStem(), etc. functions. I think that as more and more people began to use them, the more sense it made to include them in the language. OTOH, some of the functions were mis-documented (WordNum() comes to mind) and, because of that, never made it into popular usage.

'Course, this is just a WAG on my part.
