I have seen this in the past. I believe that it's a problem in the server's config where it doesn't "know" that an ASP file is a page to be displayed, so it thinks it's a file that needs to be transfered (like an EXE, DOC or other format).

Also, what version of IIS and browser were you using (I've noticed problems in most pre-version 4 browsers, from very minor to the browser going balistic with ASP pages).
