I'll tell you what I do to use an existing web... It's a long workaround, so I'm hoping someone more enlightened than yours truly will be able to offer a better solution.

I create a local copy of the web I'm working on (by copying all the files from the web to my system) and re-creating the site on my system (requires PWS, IIS depending on the platform you're using), as well, I like to have the same version of every component on my system that is on the server (IIS, MDAC, FP server extensions, etc.)

Afterwards, I create a new web project in InterDev, import all the files from the web into it and work from there. Then, when I'm done, I transfer all the files back onto the main web server.

Sounds like fun, don't it!
