Not experienced of Informix but some suggestions:

Why don' you trying using Rich Text Control if you dont require much of heavy formating.

Its not necessary to store the WORD file generated from the application into a field. What the else option u can try, is storing the path of the DOC file created and opening back when the same record is selected. Im using the same way and it work greats.
