> I've seen situations where the owners of the computers didn't even know they owned illegal software.

I've seen a lot of occaisions where this is the case. Prime example was a dear friend of mine who earns her living as an artist who carves glass. After seeing her spend 100+ hours hand carving a piece of glass with no pattern, I convinced her she had to get a computer and do the graphics arts thing.

I helped her find a high end laptop with all the multimedia ports she needed for special equipment. Then she made her boyfriend her business partner, and he took over the laptop. The boyfriend came to discover the graphics arts software they needed was far from cheap (corel suite, photoshop, ect) and supposedly spent over $1000 US dollars out of the business account to buy this software. Sure enough my girlfriend got the software she needed, and I helped her figure it out. But when the boyfriend disappeared and she had trouble with the graphics arts software, boy was she shocked to find out both Corel and Adobe tech support seemed to think she had an illegal or unregistered version. A week or so later a friend of the ex-boyfriend called her and was very irate, he wanted to know what she was doing reporting him for software piracy. So neither my friend, nor this other guy who legally owned the software she was using, had any clue what had been done.

Needless to say, my friend took such a scare over all this that she bought her own copies of the software she needs now. Its at her house waiting for me to come visit over the upcoming holiday weekend :)
