Well it seems a client-server case study in your case can help us more to be near to your problem.

Well , I believe it could be a possibility that u r using database from the unix server and your application is running on WinNT platform.

If this is the case u can make any winNT machine as a server for the doc storage and obvoiusly the path can easily be understood by the WinNT application to work with.

Because what u need is just a DOC path string getting stored into unix database server which u can obtain by making a connection in your database.

I hope this can open a new idea to u.
