Sorry, I'm tapped out...that error number is peculiar to begin with...I know that XL8 compatability in vfp6 was not fully implemented before SP3, and maybe it's still not entirely fixed...

Have you tried a fresh Excel98 sheet with say, 100 rows, 1 column, all 1 character, etc. Something real simple to test the APPEND XL8, just to see if it's your data or the APPEND command that is the culprit...
