If you go into network settings for Novell client for network and set Use extended file handles on, this may increase the file handles available to you.
Sequence goes like this:
Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network - novell Netware Client - Properties - Advanced Settings - file system - Use extended file handles - ON

From that point, you can extend them on the server. good luck!
