I think that you have been led off in the wrong direction. What did your combos display?

If the combo is bound, and the value of its control source matches one of the items in its RowSource, its Display Value will not be blank.

If you are trying to initialize the combo to the first item when the form is displayed, try setting its ListIndex to 1.
