You would have to ask those wonderful MS Engineers why. There is no practical difference between an alias and a table, an alais is just a handle(pointer) to a table. A view is just a virtual table. The major difference seems to be that calling your datasource a table works, but calling it an alias does not. Just as a note, it also will not work correctly if you set datasource = query and fail to run the query with every refresh.
