I just mean, make sure no other programs are running (like Word, etc). Make sure no virus checker is running.

Then, if I suspect I might have trouble with an installation I even remove my IR monitor (using CTRL-Alt_del in w98), and synaptics touch pad drivers, etc, etc etc.
