I once worked on an app that stored pictures of commercial real estate. We decided to store pictures externally since we had anywhere from 400 to 1200 pictures per market. We didn't want to risk loosing all of them if the fpt became corrupt.
You might consider using another file format (jpg) instead of bitmap if possible. You won't consume disk as fast.
