Another way was to have messages.dbf, where each message would have a date-time stamp, and the app would remember the time when it last read the messages. In the menu system, we had a routine which was called anytime a popup was entered or exited, and it checked for new messages in this table. In my case, it was read-only, because only admin had the right to send messages, and because we didn't want to develop a complete messaging system, but you could add a screen for entering the messages.
