I think the good old Filer uses some sort of listbox to display its files, and it required an array to store the values to (not necessarily a Fox array, but some sort of internal array). Could it be there's too many files for it? Or it's just the memory settings? You may play with Memlimit and other settings in your config.fpw - it may work, or it may not, who knows.

If the machines are networked, you may try to access a long directory (which bombs it on a long machine) from a slow machine, by proper share/mapping, and if it doesn't bomb there - I guess it's just the way it handles memory on these machines. If it does, the directory is simply too long for it.
