I guess that this creater of the UT (yeah, it is auto-linked) need some moola for some time he/she put in to create this (is it even created by FoxPro or is it Oracle) many years ago. I think I know who is the owner of this gray tie dyed UT (is it "Fonti..." something).

Chuck,

It'd be nice if everything were free. But there are real costs to maintaining the UT; beyond the hardware, connectivity costs, and large investment of time to maintain the system, not to mention the cost of software development (this isn't an off the shelf, canned solution.) This is well beyond the 'labor of love' type scenario - Michel didn't make it out to DevCon this year because of time commitments required to keep UT up and running.

If you don't feel that UT Premiere membership is worth the investment, fine, you can still access the basic functionality of UT, free of charge (beyond the cost of internet connectivity). No one is keeping you from reading messages, or downloading software.

I'm not of that opinion. I spend an inordinate amount of time on UT, and am fairly active on the board rather than just a reader. I paid for my PUTM because it was worth the money to get the added features! The PUTM has paid for itself more than once, just in the discounts I got on purchases of Stonefield's SDT and Comunications Horizons' Y2KFOX product, not to mention the discount for Hentzenwerkes titles. It made sense from a business perspective.

It makes sense to continue to contribute to UT, both with my PUTM dues and my participation on the forum. My PUTM dues help underwrite the cost of continued service and development of the UT software. My participation helps the VFP user community as a whole, including myself.

Maybe someday, you, too will see the advantages of PUTM membership, and will spend the money for it. I certainly get more in the long run from my PUTM than the cost of a decent night out for two.
