Access is an end-user tool that has some programming capabilities. So do Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. All ship with Office, an end-user product. VFP is designed for developers. It ships with Visual Studio, a developer product. VFP is designed for small office/workgroup apps all the way up to industrial strength, enterprise, line-of-business applications.

VB has no native data access. You can use Jet (yuck) or any ODBC or OLE-DB data source. VB is a general purpose development tool. A friend of mine told me once that VB is pretty much useless right out of the box. VFP will also use ODBC data sources, but it also has native data access to DBFs. The VFP data engine is one of the fastest there is.

If you're looking at developing database applications for more than just a couple of users, IMO, VFP wins easily.
