Call me thick here, but I'm not sure of what you mean by "...available in its natural state". The VFP status bar, for example, may not show the currently opened table if the form is using a private datasession. This understandable since the datasession is scoped to the form. If you could give me a bit of clarification here it might help.

If you right click the control, and select the Panels tab, you'll be able to add sections to the status bar. Using the Style property you can specify whether it's just text, caps lock, num lock, time, date, etc.
