I personally have a Linux machine I use a a gateway to the internet via a Cable Modem. Works like a champ. There are several methods to do it with Linux too... you can set up a Proxy server if you want logging. I just use something called IP Masquerading/Fowarding. It is build into the Linux kernal.

There is also a product called WinProxy (www.winproxy.com) that has got all kinds of awards.

Finally, as you said, Win 98 SE (Second Edition) is supposed to support this. I am pretty sure you can by SE Upgrade or full version.
