I remember after training a beginning programmer for just a short while, he was placing variables in the form's control source without declaring them any where. Actually, I had never seen anything like that before, but it turned out that the variable was private and could be seen throughout the form. I believe it's for backward compatibility.

I would guess that if you had declared a public variable that the control source's variable would hide the public variable being private by default. But without testing it, there's no way to tell.
