>what shud i do then ?? Can u pls suggest me ??? I'm spending 14 hours at my office from which i'm acessing the UT & net... My Company is paying for both...
>Shud i tell the company then to pay for PUTM and as well as be ready for heavy net charges cos definatelly after getting membership, i'll be using it more...
>

Yep - pay for what you use. Michel doesn'rt impose the line charges.

>Its very simple that if proxy support is not there, I'll not take the PUTM...

The if Michel says he doesn't want to make a feature avaialble to basic members, don't complain.

>That is a diff. case that net charges get reduced or we bcome online for 24 hours then I don't mind taking it but in present circumstances "NO"

Michel is no more responsible for your line charges than I am. Be reasonable in your expectations from Michel. You're willing to pay the line charges. You could always not pay the line charges and save youyr money, but then you won't have the benefitrs of internet connectivity. Sounds familiar. Don't pay for PUTM and don't get PUTM benefits, and if Michel only makes a feature available to PUTM that you'd like, pay for the feature by paying PUTM.

If you have 'heavy line charges' it's a hell of a lot more than PUTM costs, and the benefit of reduced connect time or added capability would probably reduce your usage cost. But that's something you have to decide.

>>>I'm surpised how u are connecting os, compilers etc. with this thing... Nowhere in UT it is mentioned that basic membership is a illegal thing...
>>>
>>
>>No, it's not, and I'm not advocating that Basic membership go away. I am advocating that if you want to make requests and ensure that it's possible to make the changes, contribute towards the upkeep of UT. If Michel decides that an idea is good, but that he's only going to implement it for PUTM people as an incentive to PUTM membership, you still have the option of paying for PUTM. If there's no incentive for PUTM, I guarentee that there are a lot of people who wouldn't kick in a nickle...
>>
>>>And when did i say that poor programmers shud not pay for compilers & OS ???
>>>

You said that poverty is a valid excuse for not paying PUTM fees, but that you should be entitled to all the benefits of PUTM because you "participate". Pay for your tools; UT is a tool.

>>>I bet if that is what are your policies and if you would've been the owner of UT... It wouldn't even have lasted 1 day...

>>I ran Fido 141/215 (originally Fido 215) for years. I made some significant contributions to the FidoNet throughout the mid-1980s. I had to stop doing this when the cost of the board and services exceeded what I could afford out-of-pocket. So I'm well aware of what can kill apublic-service resource.

>>I'm not paid to participate here, and none of the files that I've posted here and elsewhere have any fee for their use. There's also code that I haven't posted, that I use for commercial development; you'll occasionally see me reference my production environment code as being different from what I've put up on UT. I guess I'm evil and unprincipled; everything i do and everything i know should be contributed for gratis - I'm entitled to no benefit from the result of my own work by your measure.
>>
>>I don't run UT, am not a sysop here on UT, have never asked to be compensated for my participation, and pay my share of the burden of operating UT through PUTM because I feel strongly that there's a need for UT, and that I gain more from PUTM than the cost. Obviously, you don't. EOT.

>u've urself written that u are gaining more from PUTM then cost, plus u've also written that u buyed lot of products & got discounts...
>
>If i say that u shud pay more UT Fees, cos you're benefiting more ??? then will u do it ???

No, I take it you feel you're a special case who deserves to be underwritten, because you 'participate' here. My time and effort are, of course, worthless.

OTOH, if Michel raises the PUTM fee for everyone gaining the same benefits (gee, that sounds like a familiar situation) then I'll pay as long as I get the benefit I expect. Michel has to price PUTM in a way that makes it cost-effective to be a PUTM. It may not be for you. But don't expoect the benefits of PUTM without paying for it.

If I decide that PUTM isn't paying for itself, I'll stop paying for it, but I won't complain if after I make that decision I can't access the features I'd like to access that are only available for PUTM. If you're saying that participation on UT should be more than adequate compensation, think again. Michel doesn't live on messages from you.
