The assumption that it will be faster is not necessary true. It's not because there is less things to see in a returned HTML page that it means it was faster on the server. In some cases, the logic needed for that might make it slower.

True upcoming XML stuff, yes it will probably be done. As for now, we will keep it as is as this is what is mostly requested to avoid going back to the server to get more messages.
