Can you SUM instead of COUNT and then replace field with 1?

>I'm working on a statistical report were I need to count the number of records that have a date > hld_date and < hld_date, etc. I have attempted to use IIF(date>hld_date,field,0) in the 'Value to Store' of the Report Variable but I can see that that won't work. It's going to count 1 for the field and 1 for the 0. Any suggstions? TIA
