The network client may hold the write at the station even after the request if the network is busy or its been told to perform write caching of network data; the server probably has a delayed write strategy in software of its own, and it may schedule pending writes to take advantage of the relative head position of the read/write head on the disk The drive controller may as you mention, buffer the write to the drive, and today, most drives have their own on-drive buffer
