I came from a construction background. Wonderfully appropriate. I built large, time and money sensitive things for people that often didn't know what they wanted until they saw it, changed things constantly during construction and had to like it enough when completed to recommend me/hire me again. I got a great appreciation for good requirements and design from good architects and saw the results of bad requirements/design from bad architects. After 15 years of mostly OTJ training, I hire IT people based more on resume than degree, although the college training certainly doesn’t hurt.
