take a look at www.dimac.net (Choose Products and services on the left, then w3Components), they have a COM object called w3Jmail which allows you to simplyu send e-mail on any port, through any server.

I use it for VB and web (ASP), but it can be used in any com-capable language (VC++, VFP, even VJ++ I think).

By the way, I don't hold stocks in the company or anything, I just like the product and it's reasonably priced (around the freebie mark).
