>Windows 95 sometimes goes through the startup process as far as displaying the wallpaper and background then locks solid, requiring a re-boot. This is an intermittent problem and I'm having problems tracking down the cause. Bootlog.txt isn't reporting any failures at this stage, so that's no help.

If you have a CONTROL PANEL for your video driver, try disabling it before starting anything else. This worked for two different video cards and drivers, ATI and STB. Also check the video card manufacturer web site and/or BBS for updated drivers. Often the drivers you get with the board are very old.
