I had to do a lot of this data conversion some years back, the best ( by far ) tool I used was ACL ( I think it's a Canadian product ) which is an acronym for Audit Command Language, its particular strengths are unpacking packed fields, identifying signed/unsigned integers and so on - it also has an excellent Analyse utility which attempts and usually succeeds in identifying the structure, you can also nibble high/low order bytes, is your data in EBCDIC?
