Just a comment:

I think the person who made that statement is distiquishing between application developers and low-level developers. By low-level I mean the guys that will write the functions used by languages (no GUI stuff), will write modules that communicate on a low level with peripherals (ie. hardware drivers), and stuff like that.

I think most FoxPro programmers are developing end-user applications. We use tools provided to us by computer science types. You really don't need to have a background in CS to be a VFP applications developer.

But, I think there are a lot of application programmers that do have a CS background. There are obviously a lot of minds here that could do low-level programming. Probable quite a few who have done this professionally and possibly still do. The discussion about sorting algorithms is evidence of this.

Also, I think some people are under the impression that low-level programming somehow demands a better mind. I have to disagree. There are different areas of expertise on which one has to concentrate their focus; but I don't think that the idea that an applications programmer couldn't develop low-level functions is right. Some, probably most, have that ability. And vice versa.

Anyways, although that statement was made without enough evidence (unless the person actually checked-out a large sampling of our qualifications and noticed a trend), I do think that the person was distinguishing between Computer Programmer/Analyst graduates and Computer Science graduates.

Take it easy,
Joe
