I'm pretty sure that the client aren't dropping into any kind of suspend mode. Sometimes the connection would drop as soon as the application was started.

We think that the server has been optimized for another application. I didn't have any flexibility to make changes to the server itself. There is a way to have TCP/IP send "keep alive" packets to let the server know that the client is still there, but I didn't know what that might do to the other application.
