How many files were open on the server?? A client of mine had this problem TODAY!! They were getting Error 2005: Too many files open. As well as this, there were seek offses, record not available, unable to read file, and a couple of others. I argued with the NT Administrator there that this was a server issue (it went away lunch time), he looked at the NT Event Log and found Error 2009 (lots of them). This is a known problem and needs tweeks to the regstry to overcome the fault. They were running Terminal Server. It cost them 4 hours of my time to sort this out and leave it to somebody else to resolve. I don't know if this will help but it seems fairly similar.
