When I add a read events command to the beginning of the application the release commands no longer work the same way. Instead the focus moves from object to object and the old ones remain. This eventually relsults in more than one copy of each object being produced and all sorts of problems.

The application is actually working the way it should. You should allow the user to move to what ever form in what ever order they want. If you have a procedure that needs to chain steps, look at something like a Wizard form.
