Hi Michel.

>> I'm trying to use incremental search in a combo box which contains a large number of items (all the cities in a province, which can be over a thousand in some cases.)<<

If you are choosing from among thousands of items, you are using the wrong control. Andy Kramek and Paul Maskens wrote about the control that you want to use. It is called the ComboGrid. The article was in either the July or August kit box column in FoxTalk.

If you don't subscribe to FoxTalk, you can download the ComboGrid from library 3 of the Compuserve VFOX forum.

>> I'd like the user to be able to start typing a city name and the text part of the combo box to show up with the first city name that matches what has been typed so far - this is incremental search, right? The incremental search property is set to .T. <<

Set the style of the combo to DropDown List.
