First, you need an ISP to agree to provide you with a web server that will host your site. if you want to have your own domain name, you'll need to register the domain name; the cost for domain name registration is somewhere around $70/year, and Web hosting services are not included in that charge. many ISPs such as Earthlink will provide account holder with web site hosting services either as a part of their monthly service fee or for a nominal monthly charge - for example, Earthlink will provide you with the ability to set up a small personal Web page as a part of their service (the page is referenced relative to earthlink.net, not off your own domain name; you have to get the domain name separately); there are limits in terms of the total size of the web page and the amount of traffic generated before additional charges are incurred.

Once the web page is set up, there are a number of ways to list your site with search engines; some of these require paying an advertising fee. Most ISPs will assist you with getting basic information out to search engines, but do not provide advertising services.

If you have a continuous connection to the Internet with a fixed IP address, you can set up your own Web server using a tool like IIS; you'll need to set up a machine to work as a web server on a contiuous basis. For most operations, you're beeter off having your site hosted by an ISP who has considrably more bandwidth availble and a large number of machiens that can switch off the task of running various web sites (often referred to as a server farm); cost is much lower, but there may be limits on the types of things you can run on their servers. You'll need to contact various web hosting seervices to find one who'd be able to proviude the necessary services.
