I think you should go for it. Linux is the next big thing happening in OS'es.

There are already two full fledged magazines on Linux and hundreds of sites.
Checkout www.redhat.com, www.caldera.com or www.suse.com. You do need to to use SAMBA which is included with all distributions to connect to Windows.
Basically you can have Linux act as the file server (just like Novell Netware used to be). There are also some free offerings for client server such as Oracle and Sybase.
