I agree, Database concepts are at least as important as OOP (We couldn't use OOP in FPW 2.x but still create well working applications. I strongly reccomend reading the "An Introduction to relational database systems" written by Chris Date. Although not all is applicable to VFP. This at least gives you some very good insights into RDBMS's in general.
