PMFJI: I thought the new VARTYPE() function was reputed to be not only faster, but has the added benefit of not needed to have memvar names in quotes -- ie:
IF VARTYPE(cVar2check) <> "U"
* its defined
ELSE
* its not defined
ENDIF
