How to implement N-tier is vague because there is no standard. Sometimes 3-tier will be best, sometimes 4, other times 5 or 6 may be best. Now, if you're just talking 3-tier, you have the same problem. Do you physically install tiers 2 & 3 on the same server or different servers? Do you use MTS in the middle or something else? Should all business rules be enforced in the middle tier or some moved to the client and others to the data tier? Each situation will be different and require a different solution. Sometimes the differences will be drastic, other times subtle.
