It will depend on how willing you are to expose your system to other people, and whether the client system runs NT or Win9x. With NT, you can specify a file address in the form \\IP Address\Share name\File path or \\DNS name\Share name\File path automagically; Win9x requires you to have something translate the IP address to a NetBIOS name (a WINS server or a special file called LMHOSTS are the most common tools) and then use standard UNC referencing from there. You won't use the http protocol for this; once you've taken care of the platform-dependent address mapping issues, it's just another UNC. Again, Rick discusses this in great detail, and the real issues are more of a how do I limit control access than how do I specify a network connection using an IP address.
