I'm not sure what is coming out of the HTML checkbox, but here is a good reason for a middle tier component. In it, you could place code to format the value correctly before inserting it into the VFP table.

Also, you could try a little client side scripting which would trap the value in an ONCLICK event and format it properly before seneding it on to the server.
