Denotes a memory variable. I guess back in old days the there were only 12 WorkAreas for aliases, referenced by letters A-L. If there is a field in the open workarea named string, the field value would be returned even if you thought you were refencing a variable, so they gave m. since no alias could use that work space the prefix to variables. AFAIK
I never really used FP 2.x, started with 3
