I would not SET COMPATIBLE ON, this option forces VFP to believe that the tables are 100% compatibility with dBASE. Who knows what will happen.

I would not trust using VFP 6.0 to reindex VFP 3.0 tables. However, make a backup of all your 3.0 tables before you reindex in 6.0, because 6.0 may ask you to mark the code page and make the tables unusable in 3.0
