This was finally tracked down by following an Access thread in the Microsoft knowledgebase. Even the "paid" Microsoft support was not able to offer suggestions after 7 days and counting. Thank you very much for the update.
In my system (NT4 Wks) I already had tried to put that entry in there. The FoxPro Files reapeared in the list of sources of mail merge but when I use it I get the "Could not find installable ISAM" error.

Something is very odd though: When I initially got the problem was when I installed SQL7 (the client stuff).
Later I have installed SP3 and recently Outlook 2000.
Now I have 2 more entries in ODBC Data Sources (they appear in Word Mail merge):

Dbase Files - Word
FoxPro Files - Word

They both have the value: 'Microsoft FoxPro VFP Driver (*.dbf)' which is different from 'Microsoft Visual FoxPro Driver' - the value for the VFP Odbc.

I don't know what installed these Data Sources but they show up in word mail merge when I click 'Select method' in the 'open data source' and they work OK.

Maybe Outlook 2000 comes with this goodie ?
