Not su re exactly what you are trying to accomplish- but a reason to put code in the validation rule:
Validation rule is the only way to get a timestamp function built in to your table. By calling the correct stored procedure from the validation rule, you can have the dbc automatically populate a timestamp field with DATETIME() and a username field with the current user's login name.
