Agreed, but 1) the number of tags required to make a noticeable performance problem is very large (unless you build really complex index expressions).
2) its not might be handy, its more a case of adding view parameters that are required and adding indexes to support those. You make it sound like I'm indexing every field.
Adding extra tags for flexibility is good value for my customers since I don't have to bring their system down to add a tag if I "might" have missed one. We can't anticipate all uses the customer will make of the software and force a performance hit on them when we fail.
The net effect is I have few tags that go beyond absolutely necessary, and I've never had a call about performance problems.
