I haven't worked with Macola, but we've done lots of stuff with Accpac for Windows (we're the 3rd largest Accpac dealer in North America), which also uses Btrieve. We use DBFTrieve, a library of Btrieve access utilities, which you can purchase from Hallogram. We've also used the Pervasive Btrieve ODBC driver, but prefer to use DBFTrieve because it's about 5 times faster.
