Yeah, I'm using ALLTRIM(UPPER(somekey)), is that why the TRIM is ignored? I'm also using UPPER() in the search expression. I figured using UPPER() on both sides of the expression would speed things up because the index sorting order is case sensitive.

Someone suggested padding the search expression to match the field width if it is not a field. That makes sense.
