You're right, I think they were the lone hold-out from joining the Canadian Federation back in the 19th century, and continued to self-govern and issue stamps, etc, until right about 1949.

Of course, times have changed, and the Newfies are happy enough I guess, now it's Quebec that has been thinking about bolting the federation :)
